What follows is Part 2
The Night of À l’Orée des bois!
These past few months I have had the opportunity to experience the lighthearted genius of Montreal artist Danielle Roy of ROYBOX, the fabrication skills of Michael Curry of Michael Curry Design, world class musicians, dancers, performers and the most extraordinary citizens of Montreal who have participated in workshops to create Terra Karnaval.
In July Terra Karnaval founder Danielle Roy and Benoit Milord contacted me to ask about using the stone paper for a community Art outreach project into several neighborhoods of Montreal. Go to Part 1 to see the creative process and design.
Danielle Roy, a co founder of Juste pour Rire has created “Les Arts de la rue” for the Just for Laughs festival. Read her biography.
Under her leadership for the past 6 years Terra Karanaval has been growing with support from greats like Guy Laliberte of Cirque de Soleil, fashion Icon Jean Paul Gaultier, Michael Curry to name a few.
Danielle has developed a very magic formula for healing and drawing communities together through the sentiments of connection and possibility, participation and excellence through the actions of art, theater and of course a parade! She attracts excellent talent and support, has a rich imagination and a generous great heart on her side. Benoit Milord was seduced by the energy of the artist and joined the project in May 2012.
The production called À l’Orée des bois was held outdoors (end of October) in the heart of the Montreal Botanical Gardens.Telling the story of mythical forest creatures it was a combination of both a show and a parade with high end performers, several hundred participants (amazing Montrealers -sometimes whole families!- that had volunteered and rehearsed endlessly to be in the show) all linked by dance, song and delightful surprises for all.
Where did the stone paper come in? She wanted to design with the stone paper – costumes, props, moving creatures like a mythical deer! Danielle asked we meet and talk about the properties the paper and if it would work for her plans.
She presented her modern art fairy tale À l’Orée des Boisto the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and Space for Life, telling them that costumes and characters would be done from a simple cutting of paper leaves … of the TERRA SKIN PAPER. A great asset to the project being water resistant it was a perfect choice as an all weather eco multimedia paper for an outdoor event. She reached out to Michael Curry who enthusiastically jumped on board to replicate her sculpture and fabricate the 14 foot mythical deer.
So I will let the evening unfold just as it did…
As night fell so did the rain! Gaza completely undeterred slipped out of the forest to greet and guide his guests to the show and parade -BTW The waterproof aspect of TerraSkin just shone this night!
Gaza the stone paper deer greets his guests inviting them into the forest
Gaza then lead a dance of forest creatures that came from many directions to join in telling a musical story of dance and friendship around the reflecting pond.
fish jumped in the reflecting pond!
Spontaneously all were all invited to join in the dancing, (which really seemed like the natural thing to do!) – before being swept away in a night parade
Magical and ALIVE
The soft warm rain held the light in and wrapped us all in this cocoon of lighthearted happiness
The parade ended in joining passerbys and the forest creatures in song under the night sky
a sweet sweet night
Fun details:Wisely Danielle considered the medium she choose for the many participating kid artists in the workshops held at the musee des beaux arts. Oil pastels would not quickly be mixed into one tone of brown by the young artists and added the unexpected bonus of being very weather proof!
waterproof and comfy this forest belle was delightedthe Big Cheeses! Danielle has the fashionable ears
… All this started by a french horn sounding off over the water and the notes of a cello weaving through the twilight air calling on these forest creatures to come and dance with us, leading us into laughter and being intensely alive.
Thanks to wonderful creative team from Roybox!
